Good news for some 15-inch MacBook Pro owners. Yesterday Apple announced that they are  replacing batteries on some of its MacBook Pro with Retina Display notebooks. Apple says its batteries “may overheat and pose a fire safety risk.”

The “voluntary” recall only covers 2015 MacBook Pros sold between September 2015 and February 2017. This does not cover the newer TouchBar models. The company is calling this as a “limited” recall but with an estimated millions of Macs sold each year there are likely hundreds of thousands affected. For now, Apple says that batteries on other MacBook models including the 13-inch Pro during the same period were safe and do not pose any risks.

Information on the affected model and serial numbers can be located here at Apple’s support page. MacBook owners can have their battery replaced for free through any of its authorized service providers or request a mail in repair. Aside from its Apple authorized stores, locations now also include nearly 1,000 Best Buy stores. Apple estimates that service may take 1 to 2 weeks and this won’t extend your warranty.

This latest announcement is just one in the recent strings of hardware related issues plaguing its MacBook Pros. In March, we saw the company replacing its butterfly keyboard on the newer MacBook Pros. Since the battery is glued to the case and keyboard, Apple will be replacing the entire top-case on affected models.

It seems the new models of Macbook Pro may have even more issues than the older models. Previously, Apple had huge issues with their 2011 models and the infamous GPU issues. It’s a bit reassuring that Apple creates these programs to fix And even better, doing something to address these accordingly. Bad battery and all, we’re just happy the company is acknowledging this latest issue and getting better, newer batteries in the process.
